Pursuit of stolen car ends in arrest after suspect runs onto Interstate 5 in Bankers Hill
A driver in a stolen car crashed into a vehicle during a pursuit and then ran onto Interstate 5 before officers made an arrest in the Bankers Hill area Sunday afternoon, police said.
The incident began about 2 p.m. when someone jumped into a white Hyundai Sonata that was left running in the area of Commercial and 19th streets in Logan Heights, police said.
About 15 minutes later, officers spotted the stolen vehicle in East Village and tried to stop the driver, according to police. The driver didn’t stop, prompting a pursuit.
As officers gave chase, the driver crashed into another vehicle near Elm Street and Second Avenue in Bankers Hill, police said. The driver then ran onto nearby I-5 with at least one officer running after him. The officer reported that the man tried to get into another vehicle, but apparently was not successful.
The man was arrested after a brief struggle and booked into jail on charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, police said.
The incident prompted a crash on I-5 that appeared to be minor, according to police. No further information was immediately available.
