Santiago girls basketball coach Pablo Martinez, who guided the Cavaliers to Garden Grove League titles and playoff appearances each of the past four years, has resigned, he confirmed Tuesday.
Martinez, a walk-on coach, said he has been offered a girls basketball coaching position at another school but isn’t yet able to discuss the situation.
“It was a tough decision (to resign),” said Martinez, who coached his alma mater for five seasons. “I love the school. What we accomplished was nuts.”
Santiago finished 18-9 last season, including a 10-0 record in league. The Cavaliers lost to Claremont 51-41 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 3AA playoffs.
The team was led by All-County junior point guard Andi Martinez, the daughter of the coach who earned league MVP.
Coach Martinez also led Santiago to Garden Grove League titles in 2021 and 2020 with 10-0 records.
The Cavaliers claimed the league title in 2019 with a 9-1 record and began a 37-game league winning streak that will carry into the 2022-23 season.
Martinez finished with an 83-45 record at Santiago.
