Search underway for man overboard from Catalina-bound boat near Long Beach

LONG BEACH — A search was underway Friday morning for a 24-year-old man who fell or jumped overboard from the Catalina Express after the boat left Long Beach.

The incident occurred about 6 p.m. Thursday, according to the U.S Coast Guard, which was searching for the man, as was with the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s departments and the Long Beach Fire Department.

“Deckhands actually saw some of it, so when they saw him hit the water, they threw a life ring over and … we are looking for him,” Greg Bombard, president of Catalina Express, told CBS2.

The search effort was downgraded Thursday night to two aircraft and four vessels, the station reported.
