Sheriff’s detectives trying to locate driver who struck two Santee shoppers and tried to rob one of them

Sheriff’s officials on Wednesday asked for the public’s help to find the driver of a pickup who drove into two shoppers as they were leaving a Kohl’s department store in Santee and tried to rob them last week.

The incident occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Friday outside the store on Mission Gorge Road near Carlton Hills Boulevard, said sheriff’s Detective Amanda Rego.

Investigators released a sketch of a man they said was driving the older model dark green two-door pickup with black rims or hubcaps, possibly a Toyota Tacoma from the model years 1995 to 2002.

The man struck the two women with his truck as they were walking to their car. One of the victims told detectives the man then tried to steal her purse before he got back into his truck and drove off.

Both women suffered minor injuries. One of the victims was taken to a hospital, Rego said.

She said the suspect was described as Latino, between 45 and 55 years old, about 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a heavy build, dark eyes and a dark mustache. He was last seen wearing a gray beanie, dark plaid puffer jacket and dark pants.

There was surveillance video taken of the truck. Investigators decided to ask the public for help because they haven’t developed many leads in the case, Rego said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department at (858) 565-5200. Tips also can be made anonymously to San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. Tipsters may be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward if their information leads to a felony arrest.
