A 26-year-old man was struck and killed by a suspected drunken driver early Sunday after he exited his vehicle following a collision on state Route 94 in Lemon Grove, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol received a call about 2:30 a.m. from a driver who claimed to have hit something on eastbound SR-94 near the junction of state Route 125.
A non-injury collision had occurred on eastbound SR-94 between two sedans and one of the car careened down an embankment and ended up against the concrete barrier on north SR-125, said CHP Sgt. Kevin Long. The other vehicle remained on SR-94.
One of the drivers involved in the earlier crash got out of his vehicle and was hit by a car heading east on SR-94, Long said. Footage from OnScene TV showed first responders administering CPR to the victim, but the man died before he could be taken to a hospital.
Police arrested the 27-year-old driver who struck the victim on suspicion of driving under the influence, said Long. The CHP shut down eastbound transition ramps and some highway lanes for a few hours as they investigated the incident.
