Sheriff’s deputies pursued carjacking suspects late Saturday in Spring Valley and recovered the stolen car a short distance away — but the thieves got away, officials said.
The carjacking was reported just before 11 p.m. on Campo Road near Kenwood Drive, just north of state Route 94. The victim told police the robbers —a duo — were wearing ski masks and had a gun.
A pursuit ensued after deputies spotted the Hyundai Sonata in the area, sheriff’s Lt. Joe Berry said.
The chase ended in the area of Fury Lane near Lonny Brewer County Park, just east of Avocado Boulevard and west of Rancho San Diego, where three occupants ditched the car and ran away. The area is about three miles away from where the carjacking was reported.
Deputies surrounded and searched the area but were unable to locate any suspects, Berry said. The car was returned to the owner.
