Sweet festival in Belmont Shore arrives just before Valentine’s Day

Belmont Shore is ready to serve the city’s sweet tooth later this week during the 17th annual Belmont Shore Chocolate Festival.

Similar to a Stroll and Savor, but for chocolate fans, the Saturday afternoon, Feb. 11, event will feature samples of sweets from more than 25 businesses on Second Street. Visitors can buy samples with tickets — books of 12 tickets are $15.

“It’s time to break out your best red and pink outfit and get your chocolate on!” Heather Kern, Belmont Shore Business Association’s executive director, said. “There’s not another event where you can sample so many sweets in one place.”

There also will be two contests during the festival.

Home bakers and confectioners have a chance to show their skills with the Homemade Chocolate Dessert Contest. Contestants will compete in four categories: chocolate cakes and pies, chocolate cookies and brownies, unique chocolate treats, and overall best chocolate dessert.

Entry costs $10 a dish, but is free for students and minors. Judging will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in front of Chase Bank at Second Street and Corona Avenue. The judges are Justin Rudd, Brian Addision and Dina Amadril, the chef/owner of Long Beach Creamery (only judges can sample the desserts). There also will be an award for best dessert from youngsters.

Then at 3 p.m., the popular chocolate pie eating contest, sponsored by Hoff’s Hut, will begin. The race is to see who can eat an individual-sized chocolate pie the fastest. There are five age categories: 6-8, 9-11, 12-14, 15-17 and 18 and up.

To participate, sign up the day of the event at the contest area, in front of Chase Bank. The contest is free to enter.

There will be live music along the street, and Alf’s Body Art will offer a special sweet flash tattoo starting at noon.

The chocolate tasting will run until 3 p.m. or when the chocolate runs out. Ticket books can be purchased beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chase Bank, Shore Business Center, The Beach on 2nd, Blue Windows and Salon Soma.
