Teen girl, stepfather killed while crossing street in National City

A 15-year-old girl and her 39-year-old stepfather were killed Wednesday night when they were hit by a car driven by a suspected drunken driver in National City, authorities said.

The two were walking home, crossing East Plaza Boulevard near South Harbison Avenue — after going to 7-Eleven for snacks — when they were struck by a Toyota Prius around 9:55 p.m., said National City police Sgt. Kenneth Springer.

It appeared the two were not in a crosswalk when they were struck by a car traveling west on the road, police Sgt. Joe Camacho told OnScene TV.

The girl died before she could be taken to a hospital. The man was taken by paramedics to a hospital, where he died. The names of the two people who died have not been released.

The driver of the Prius, Tayishe Baltys, 43, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

She was being held in county jail in lieu of $500,000 bail, according to a Sheriff’s Department jail booking website.
