Los Alamitos’ defense has received a major addition who could make the Griffins a stronger contender in Division 1 this fall.
T.A. Cunningham of Johns Creek in Georgia, the No. 1-rated junior defensive lineman in the nation by 247Sports, has enrolled at the Sunset League school, Griffins football coach Ray Fenton confirmed Thursday.
The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Cunningham holds about 60 scholarship offers, including Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas A & M, Michigan, USC and UCLA.
Last season, he recorded 51 total tackles, three sacks and seven hurries for Johns Creek (9-4), according to MaxPreps.
At Los Alamitos, Cunningham will join a defensive front that is expected to feature returner Sinn Brennan (6-5, 235), Servite transfer Vaka Hansen (6-2, 305) and Orange Lutheran transfer Ryder Trujillo (6-4, 240). The Griffins also are expected to have freshman Manoah Faupusa (6-2, 310).
Los Alamitos’ defense allowed almost 22 points per game last season. The unit is heavy on returners in the secondary and added Servite transfer Hoi Hansen to its group of linebackers.
The Griffins, led by the USC-committed duo of Malachi Nelson and Makai Lemon on offense, could be ranked second to Mater Dei in the Orange County preseason poll.
