Westbound SR-78 lanes will remain closed this week due to delays in sinkhole repairs

The reopening of westbound state Route 78 lanes in Oceanside has been delayed by multiple days as crews continue to repair a storm-damaged section of the highway.

The westbound lanes from College Boulevard to El Camino Real have been closed since Wednesday, after a 230-foot section of a culvert broke and created a huge sinkhole under the highway near College Boulevard.

Caltrans previously predicted the lanes would reopen by Monday. But on Sunday, the agency announced that lanes will remain closed this week due to two new culverts that were discovered after the repairs began Wednesday. Forecasts of rain expected for this week also will delay the reopening, the agency said.

A closure of the eastbound lanes will begin once the westbound lane repairs are complete.

Drivers should detour to the College Boulevard/Vista Way off-ramp, then travel west on Vista Way to the El Camino Real on-ramp, Caltrans said.
