One of two women who drowned Saturday after a panga boat capsized off the coast of Imperial Beach has been identified, authorities said.
Julia Estebana Chan Canul, 39-year-old Mexican national, drowned before witnesses and lifeguards noticed the overturned vessel about 6:10 a.m. in the waters near Seacoast Drive and Cortez Avenue, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The second woman who drowned was between the ages of 16 and 25 and presumed to be a Mexican national, according to the medical examiner. She has not yet been identified.
At least 10 people were thought to be on the boat, the county Sheriff’s Department said.
Surfers in the area and county lifeguards helped pull people to shore, according to footage from OnScene TV.
