McGowan to help mate Albo snag win on polling day

Mark McGowan will be out on election day, battling to win over undecided voters for Labor leader and “terrific fellow” Anthony Albanese.

In a scenario which will send shivers down the spines of Liberal strategists, the ultra-popular Premier is expected to hand out how-to-vote cards for Labor in key marginal seats on May 21.

“I will go and do my bit,” he said during his address at The West Australian’s post-budget Leadership Matters event on Friday.

“I think I’m scheduled to eat a sausage somewhere. I don’t know if that is helping the cause much. And I will certainly vote for my local Labor member.”

Mr McGowan told The West State political editor Peter Law he was a seasoned campaigner, having handed out how-to-vote cards “since Bob Hawke was prime minister”.

Mr Albanese has sought to capitalise on Mr McGowan’s cult appeal to bolster Labor’s chances of winning key WA seats, choosing Perth to launch his campaign and appearing alongside him in advertising.

At that launch, Mr McGowan declared he was “completely in-sync” with his party’s federal leader.
