Ibiza and Formentera on red alert, as Mallorca temperatures top 41

The met agency Aemet has issued a red alert for high temperatures in Ibiza and Formentera. The alert came into effect at 1pm on Saturday and will last until 7pm.

This is the first red alert of the summer in the Balearics and applies once forecast or actual temperatures hit 42C. In Formentera, a high of 43.5C was registered at 1.30pm on Saturday.

The temperatures are subject to verification, but there seems little doubt that Mallorca is experiencing the hottest day of the year – a high, as of 2.45pm, of 41.6C in Pollensa and Porreres.

There are highs above 41C in Alicante and Murcia. Otherwise, the top ten highest temperatures in Spain on Saturday are in the Balearics.
