President Joe Biden has “rushed” to congratulate the men’s USA football squad after they beat Iran 1-0 to progress to the next stage of the World Cup. He revealed to the crowd that he had offered some encouraging words to the players before the game and had always believed in their triumph.
England and the USA, as the top two teams in Group B, will now move on to the Final 16 while Iran and Wales bow out of the competition.
A video posted on Twitter claimed that the President had “rushed back to the microphone to announce the Team USA win.”
The POTUS told the assembled crowd: “When I spoke to the coach and the players, I said, You can do this! They went ehhh. They did it, God love ’em.”
The move attracted a number of sweet comments on Twitter, with @lastcallforaj writing: “That’s actually adorable lol he’s so old and cute.”
User @TKwandra noted: “There was nothing rushed about that walk”, while @sunshinenroses7 replied: “He’s 80. It was rushed for him lol.”
Another Twitter user @kevinf280 commented: “God love em. My grandpa used to say that.
“People might not agree with Joe on everything, but you have to like the guy.”
England topped Group B with a strong 3-0 win over Wales on Tuesday, having drawn with the USA 0-0 last Friday.
Gareth Southgate’s squad are set to face Senegal in their next match on Sunday while the US play Netherlands on Saturday.
The World Cup final will be played on Sunday December 18.
