Portola and Crean Lutheran made historical debuts in the CIF-SS boys water polo playoffs Tuesday.
Portola, seeded fourth in Division 4, defeated host Valencia 14-7 for its first postseason victory in school history. Sophomore attacker Noam Garibi led the way with four goals, five steals and three drawn exclusions.
The Bulldogs (20-9) advanced to play at Citrus Belt League runner-up Redlands in the second round Thursday. Redlands finished second in league to fifth-seeded Redlands East Valley in Division 2.
Crean Lutheran, the top-seed in Division 6, also notched the first playoff victory in school history with a 17-7 win at Hillcrest. Sophomore utility Jonathan DiPinto scored eight goals to lead the Saints (18-6), who play at Lakeside in the second round Thursday.

In Division 2:
Servite 24, Arlington 7: Sophomore attacker Kai Baker scored six goals to pace the visiting and top-seeded Friars (20-9), who face Pacific Coast League champion University in the second round Thursday. The match could be played at Woodbridge.
Patrick Edwards and Elias Guirado each added four goals for Servite, an at-large entry from the Trinity League.
University advanced with a 14-12 victory against Capistrano Valley at Woodbridge.
El Dorado 16, El Segundo 12: Senior Brody Swarm scored four goals and drew two penalties and 6-foot-6 senior goalie Joshua Dachenhausen made 13 saves to lead the visiting Golden Hawks (24-5), who play Edison in the second round Thursday.
Edison 13, Costa Mesa 7: Senior Everett Rowden led the visiting Chargers in scoring.
Aliso Niguel 21, Temple City 5: Tanner Haslinger scored six goals and Weston Lorenzo added seven saves and four steals to lead the host Wolverines (22-5), who play Newbury Park in the second round Thursday. Newbury Park defeated Schurr 18-9 in the first round.
Yorba Linda 14, Esperanza 7: The Crestview League runner-up advanced to the second round Thursday against M.L. King, which edged Murrieta Valley 14-13.
Pacifica 9, Santa Ynez 8: The Empire League champion Mariners (17-12) advanced to play at No. 2 seeded and Sea View League champion San Juan Hills in the second round Thursday.
In Division 5:
Sage Hill 10, Katella 8: Junior Boden Wagner had five goals, four assists and four steals to lead the visiting Lightning (10-8) past the Golden West League champion Knights. Sophomore goalie Billy Ray added 10 saves, including one against a penalty shot.
Sage Hill, a freelance entry, plays host to Cypress in the second round Thursday at 5 p.m.
Cypress 19, Western 13: Junior Cooper Laws scored seven goals at Garden Grove to lead the Centurions (15-10), an at-large entry from the Empire League.
Tustin 26, Savanna 9: Senior Reagan Bagnol had seven goals, six assists and four steals to lead the Tillers (17-9), who advanced to play the Whittier-Ontario winner in the second round Thursday.
In Division 6:
Saddleback 16, Bolsa Grande 1: Junior utility Marlon Yllescas recorded four assists and three steals to lead the Roadrunners (15-9), who play at Mark Keppel in the second round Thursday.
