West Aussies unable to ‘check in’ amid SafeWA outage

The SafeWA app is down, leaving punters unable to “check-in” with their phones at venues across Western Australia.

The app is mandatory at businesses state-wide, and is used by authorities to trace infections in the event of an outbreak.

As of 2pm Tuesday afternoon, users opening the app are confronted with a blank white screen.

In a tweet the State Government blamed the outage on a technical issue.

“SafeWA is currently experiencing technical issues resulting in users being unable to check-in via the app,” the tweet read.

“Our technical teams are working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue.

“If you are unable to access the app, you can still check-in using a manual contact register.”

One user on social media fumed: “As usual the ones who try to do the right thing can’t. Sort it out.”

It is unclear how long it has been down, how long the outage will last, and whether users in all regions are impacted.

WA’s Health Department has been contacted for comment.

The app has recorded more than 463 million check-ins since it was launched just over a year ago. About 90,000 businesses are registered with SafeWA.

The WA Health Department has confirmed contact registration at venues will continue as part of WA’s “safe transition plan”, announced earlier this month, to open the border when the double dose vaccination rate hits 90 per cent.

This is expected to occur in January or February next year.
