Coachella 2022: Everything that happened on Friday of Weekend 1 — from Harrychella to surprise guests

Finally, we’re back at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club after three long years and a pandemic.

The fest kicked off its 21st year on Friday, April 15, with plenty of sunshine and happy people, many of whom held on to their tickets from 2020 to attend, even though the lineup changed significantly.

These photos show you what it’s like to be on the ground at Coachella 2022.

Even though it took a long time for Coachella to finally return, people were excited, especially for Harry Styles’ Friday night headlining debut. In addition to the Harry Styles’ die-hards we met in Indio celebrating Harrychella, we also went to his pop-up spot, which is offering free manicures.

By the way, he debuted two new songs and brought out Shania Twain and the internet went wild. Read all about Harry’s Friday night performance.

But long before Harry wrapped Friday night with some fireworks, artists such as Omar Apollo, German techno marching band MEUTE and Mongolian folk metal band The Hu performed in the afternoon to get things started.

Anitta had a star-studded Coachella debut, bringing out both Snoop Dogg and Saweetie early in her set. Fans in the crowd and watching along at home were pumped.

However, those celebrating #Couchella from home had another issue — the livestream on YouTube faced delays throughout the day.

And Anitta wasn’t the only star to bring out a guest. Daniel Caesar tapped Justin Bieber to join him for his turn on the main stage before Styles took over, even if it was only for a couple of minutes.

Elsewhere in the field, Arcade Fire created yet another Coachella moment with a truly joyous set in the Mojave Tent that was a surprise announcement on Thursday. Did we mention the band had a bunch of those inflatable figures you can find at a used car lot, too?

We covered a lot of the performers during the day, including Phoebe Bridgers, Lil Baby, City Girls, Princess Nokia and more. Check out the photos from our team of Friday’s performers.
